I have been gone for a while, but thankfully not forever!
.
This is an Oliver Twist illustration of Oliver running to Rose Maylie for comfort. I went for a garden setting, which is something mostly new for me but what I’ve wanted to do for a long time. I was inspired by one part of the text in the novel:
.
“The boy stirred, and smiled in his sleep, as though these marks of pity and compassion had awakened some pleasant dream of a love and affection he had never known. Thus, a strain of gentle music, or the rippling of water in a silent place, or the odour of a flower, or the mention of a familiar, will sometimes call up sudden dim remembrances of scenes that never were, in his life; which vanish like a breath; which some brief memory of a happier existence, long gone by, would seem to have awakened; which no voluntary exertion of the mind can ever recall.” (Dickens, 229)
.
While this illustration doesn’t depict the exact scene of this text, it expresses how important Rose is for Oliver. In this case, Oliver’s source of comfort and (in my opinion) empowerment!
.
As done with a previous artwork, I attempted a complimentary color scheme (Green & Red). The Maylie Cottage in the background to the left is meant to contrast with Rose and Oliver, who are in green, as well as most of the setting. While I went all out with the flowers of the foreground, at the same time, I wish I could’ve done more detail with the trees, but thankfully we can always learn!
.
I hope you find this to be quite the pretty work!
